For example, it is not likely that men’s hair dyes designed to “get out the gray” will spread into parts of rural Africa where a person’s status is elevated with advancing years. '기존에 있던 것과 비교해서 유용성이 떨어지면
받아들이지 않는다'입니다.

어떤 아이템이 수용될지, 아닐지는,

1) 아이템의 용도[on the item’s use]:
뒤에서는 '사회의 필요'로 구체화함[consistent with a society’s needs]

2) 기존 특성과의 양립가능성[compatibility with already existing cultural traits]

둘을 모두 고려하여 결정되는 것입니다.

첫번째 예로 제시된 '염색약'은 1번조차 만족하지 못합니다.
지위가 나이로 평가되는 곳[a person’s status is elevated with advancing years]에서
염색약은 쓸모가 없죠.

Even when으로 시작하는 예시인 '미터법'은 1번은 만족하나[consistent with a society’s needs] 2번을 만족하지 못하는 경우(=양립불가능)을 설명하고 있습니다. 따라서 빈칸에는 미터법과 동일한 의미를 지니는 단어가 들어가야 합니다. 미터법과 염색약 모두 '기존'의 것과 양립 가능한지를 따지고 있습니다. 이를 통해 미터법과 염색약 모두 새로운 요소임을 추론가능하기에 innovation이 정답이 되는 것입니다.
